What is Caritas Foundation?

Caritas, Caritas Manila to be exact, is the lead Catholic agency for social services and development in the Archdiocese of Manila.

Caritas Manila, meaning there are other offices aside from the one found in Manila?

Yes. Up until the year 2002, Caritas Manila directly served a geographic scope that approximated the premier area of Metro Manila, Philippines. Since then, five suffragan dioceses have been created from former ecclesiastical districts of the Archdiocese of Manila; namely, the Dioceses of Cubao, Kalookan, Novaliches, Paranaque and Pasig.

Today, Caritas Manila directly serves the vicariates of Manila and Makati under the Archdiocese. We also extend technical assistance to Caritas offices in the newly created suffragan dioceses, concentrating on institution- and capability-building.

When was Caritas Manila founded?

Caritas Manila was established as Catholic Charities in 1953, at the initiative of Rufino Cardinal Santos, the first Filipino Cardinal and 29th Archbishop of Manila. Historians recorded it as a landmark event, bringing structure and organization to the way charitable works were being carried out in that post-war era and pointing the way to future Church intervention in the problems of the poor.

Jaime Cardinal Sin renamed the institution as Caritas Manila after his installation in 1974.

Who are Caritas Manila’s beneficiaries and how are they helped?

Caritas Manila’s prioritizes to help, most especially the poor, through the key issues of Livelihood and Employment, Housing, Restorative Justice and Family and Life.

While Caritas agrees that poverty may be described in various forms of “lack” – of opportunities, of security, of power – we view poverty chiefly as a situation that affronts the human person’s inherent dignity as a child of God.

How does Caritas Manila work? Who are its proponents?

Caritas Manila enjoins all Catholics in Metro Manila to volunteer their time, talent and treasure in the parish’s social services and development ministry. This is a long-term involvement that brings together people with a heart for service, gives an outlet for their zeal, and deepens their commitment through continuing formation and exposure to our less fortunate brethren.

Is it a purely Catholic organization? Does it only help Catholics?

Love compels Caritas Manila to help when we are needed. We believe that we are all one family in Christ, beyond differences of race, gender, economic status or religion. We do primarily operate, however, in the Archdiocese of Manila.

What are your programs and activities?

CARITAS MANILA’s programs include (1) strengthening parish social services and development ministries in the areas of organization, education, operations and finance; (2) volunteer development and management; (3) educational assistance for more than 1,000 scholars; (4) para-legal, social and pastoral services for the prison community, including children-in-conflict-with-the-law (CICL).

How can we participate in your activities?

Caritas Manila welcomes your support. Whether you are an individual, a group, a business company, or a grant-making institution, there are several ways in which you can help in our work.

Should you or your organization wish to learn and participate personally, Caritas Manila takes capability building and volunteer development to heart. Formation programs, chief among which are our modules on Catholic Social Teachings and Christian Leadership, are held. Our social development officers are ready to offer technical and management consultancies in the areas of organizational development, program development and management, trainer are training and resource generation.

How or where does Caritas Manila, if you don’t mind, get its funding?

Since the early 1980’s, Caritas Manila has sourced its program funds locally, in the belief that the onus of Philippine development should be on the Filipino people. Each year, we target to raise at least 50% of our programs’ needs through our fundraising campaigns. Donations come variously from individuals, companies, organizations.

on personal growth and social interactions

nung grade school ako, sanay akong laging nasa top ten (pahumble effect lang toh, first honor kasi talaga lagi ako. :D). lagi kasing may suhol si mama. pag nakaperfect ako sa lahat ng exam, may bagong barbie ako. pag nakasagot ako sa recitation, pupunta kaming sm. namulat ako sa ganito. so nung bata ako, kailangan lahat ng gawin kong maganda, may magandang kapalit din. kaya ayun, nag valedictorian ako nung elementary. :D

on volunteerism

on philippine society and culture

culture may refer to norms, beliefs, practices (the what's), interactions or socializations (the how's).

according to professor santos from the anthro dept., culture is something that is related to all humankind, beliefs, knowledge, morals, laws, customs and other practices acquired by man as a member of his society. it is something that cannot be separated or taken away from us. it is something that will lives within us, a part of us, our everyday living. culture is something we attain from our every struggles, from each and every person we encounter or we just see, from the environment where we grew up.
every person we meet might have a different culture from ours. by culture, we automatically think of their beliefs, religion, or practices. let's take filipinos for example. philippines is a very diverse country, having different races, and yes, culture. every place we go to has a different belief from the other. everything inside a particular place affects and influences its culture. people from mindanao, which are mostly muslims, have a different culture from that of the christian catholics which dominates the luzon/visayas area. muslims have different practices such as the ramadan where fasting applies and the like. also, allah is their god. while christians believe that there is only one god, the father of jesus christ.
diversity of culture should result to respect. each and everyone should respect their fellow filipino because even though we grew up with different cultures, it is this one thing that people can never change, that we are filipinos. =)

on community service and service learning

community service
refers to service that a person performs for the benefit of his or her local community
- community service is something a person or a group does to help his/her/their fellowmen or his/her/their community.

service learning
is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service frequently youth service throughout the community

- service learning is how professors and students in cwts teaches, learns and reflects on different experiences inside the classroom and within the community which the class frequently visits.

expectations in CWTS

everybody expects their chosen subjects to be fun, interactive and interesting.. yun din ang gusto ko.. =)

my reason why i expect (or want) my classes to be fun, interactive and interesting is for better digestion, understanding and application of the lessons in real life, especially everything i will learn in this class. =)
